Frequently Asked Questions Part #1

Hola!

Today, I want to talk about the most asked questions that I get when I’m in my salon. Hopefully you learn something new or apply a new tip to your routine!

Got a question? Let me know in the comments and I will try to answer or write a post about it..

  1. “How do I get rid of frizz?”

If you live in an area where its more humid, you are probably more prone to having frizz. Frizz occurs in humid climates because your hair will expand and try to grab the water molecules that are in hair. What this means is that if you hair is frizzy it is dry and needs water/moisture. It could also be damaged from heat tools. I would do a deep conditioning mask once a week or twice a week to help provide moisture and protein to stop breakage and dryness in the hair. Try to let your hair air dry, always use a heat protectant, blow dry your hair with the nozzle pointing down and use oil or a wax or creme to tame down the fly-aways.

2. “How do I make my hair grow longer? I feel like it never grows!”

Your hair does grow, it probably just breaks off really easily. The longer you go without a haircut, the more your split ends will ‘split’ and break off, leaving your hair shorter than it was before. Regular haircuts, even if its just a trim will help keep your hair healthy and aid in keeping your hair long. Try to let your hair rest from color or bleaching services which can cause breakage in the hair and removes vital proteins from the hair cuticle. Take care of your hair by brushing correctly, using proper hair products and instead of always doing a ponytail or bun, try to incorporate more braids or switch up the height of the bun or ponytail so it’s not causing tension in the same spot in the head which can also lead to breakage.

3. “Should I come in with dirty hair?”

The answer is no. I’m not sure where people got the idea that it’s better to come in with dirty hair to your appointment, but for me I don’t think it’s better. When you’re hair is dirty, it could have buildup due to products, the environment or the water you use, which can get in the way of the color or bleaching process. Often times this can cause reactions in the hair or unpredictable and uneven results. Also, who wants to touch dirty hair? Same thing goes with updo’s and styling. I like to style hair on a clean canvas and ‘dirty’ it up purposefully with product like texturizing sprays or hairsprays.

4. “What shampoos do you recommend from Walmart or Target (etc.)”

NONE. Its okay, I used to be a walmart & target (sometimes dollar tree) shampoo user..so no judgement here.

Honestly, if you never color your hair and you just wash it every once in a while, I guess it’s kind of okay to go that route.. The only main concern I have is that they are not guaranteed by the brand if not sold by a salon and products sold in grocery stores may have been tampered with or may be expired. They also leave a lot of buildup in your hair (professional shampoos can do this too) and you may not get as much product as you would a professional brand.

I’m not telling you what to do, but that’s just what I have found and we can go deeper into drugstore shampoos in a later post.

HOWEVER, if you bleach, dye, color, highlight etc, I wouldn’t use drugstore/grocery store shampoos. You cannot maintain a $200-400 color with $8 shampoo. Professional products are designed to help heal, restore and protect the hair so your color lasts longer and your hair not only ‘feels’ healthier but actually becomes healthier and stays that way.
